Robotic Surgery
For years, WashU Medicine and BJC surgeons at BJC HealthCare hospitals have been working to provide patients with expanded treatment options like robotic-assisted surgery. Minimally invasive robotic surgery allows surgeons to perform complex or delicate procedures that otherwise may be difficult or impossible to perform with other methods. It can also result in less pain, smaller incision sites, and faster recovery all while receiving the same excellent care from our talented surgical team.
Why choose us for robotic-assisted surgery?
Surgeons at BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine are trained in robotic-assisted surgery and provide care that is both compassionate and innovative. We’re committed to helping you recover quickly and easily with minimally invasive procedures so that you can get back to living life to the fullest. BJC HealthCare offers robotic-assisted procedures at every hospital for a range of conditions, from gallbladder and joint replacement surgery to transplant and cancer.
- Innovators in robotic-assisted surgery: In 2023, WashU Medicine physicians at Barnes-Jewish Hospital performed the first robotic liver transplant in the United States.
- Collaborative, compassionate care: BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine experts, including surgeons, specialists, and nurses, work together to provide tailored care. You’ll receive treatment from compassionate providers who will guide you through the surgery process—offering you the best surgical plan for your individual needs.
- Easier recovery and less downtime: Robotic-assisted surgeries often result in easier recovery, smaller scars, and shorter hospital stays compared to open or laparoscopic surgery.
- Expanded, innovative treatment options: In addition to open and minimally invasive surgeries, every BJC HealthCare hospital in the region has robotic-assisted technology and is committed to offering expanded treatment options for a range of conditions.
While robotic-assisted surgery isn’t always an appropriate option, if you or a loved one need surgery, having a provider who can guide you through your options matters.

What is robotic surgery?
Robotic-assisted surgery procedures are often less invasive and easier to recover from. During robotic-assisted surgery, a surgeon will control robotic arms equipped with sensors and cameras that can help the surgeon create small and steady movements often resulting in surgical incisions that are smaller than both open and laparoscopic surgeries.
During surgery, the surgeon controls three robotic arms, one with a camera and two holding surgical instruments steady, allowing for more precision and stability, especially in confined spaces within the body.
Robotic surgery is available for a range of procedures, including:
- Abdominal surgery
- Cardiovascular surgery
- Colorectal surgery
- Gynecologic surgery
- Head and neck surgery
- Orthopedic surgery
- Spine surgery
- Transplant surgery
- Urological surgery
